AMRUT 2.0

AMRUT 2.0 (Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation 2.0) is India’s ambitious urban development mission, launched in October 2021, focused on making cities “water secure” by ensuring universal tap water connections, 100% sewerage/septage management in 500 cities, rejuvenating water bodies, creating green spaces, promoting circular water economy, and leveraging technology for sustainable urban living through 2026. It builds on the first phase with a larger vision and budget, aiming for self-reliant, water-secure cities. 

 

Key Objectives & Features:
  • Universal Water Coverage: Provide functional tap connections to all households in all statutory towns.
  • Sewerage & Septage: Achieve 100% coverage in 500 AMRUT cities.
  • Circular Economy of Water: Focus on recycling treated wastewater, rejuvenating water bodies, and rainwater harvesting.
  • Water Body Rejuvenation: Restore lakes, ponds, and rivers, and develop green spaces/parks.
  • Technology Adoption: Use modern tech for water management.
  • Pey Jal Survekshan: A competition among cities to assess water service quality, quantity, and equitable distribution.
  • Reforms: Encourage property tax reforms, user charges for O&M, and better urban planning.
