Water Supply Role and Responsibilities

The Water Supply & Sewerage Department is responsible for planning, operation, and maintenance of urban water supply and sewerage systems to ensure safe drinking water, effective wastewater management, public health protection, and environmental sustainability.

  1. Water Supply Planning & Management
  • Assessment of present and future water demand of the city
  • Planning and execution of water supply schemes
  • Development and augmentation of water sources (rivers, reservoirs, tube wells)
  • Coordination with state agencies and funding bodies
  1. Treatment & Quality Control
  • Operation and maintenance of Water Treatment Plants (WTPs)
  • Ensuring water quality as per BIS / CPHEEO standards
  • Regular sampling, testing, and monitoring of drinking water
  • Preventive measures against contamination and waterborne diseases
  1. Distribution System Management
  • Operation and maintenance of water distribution networks
  • Ensuring equitable and adequate water supply to all zones/wards
  • Leak detection, pipeline repairs, and pressure management
  • Metering, reduction of non-revenue water, and service connections
  1. Sewerage System Planning & Execution
  • Planning, construction, and expansion of sewerage networks
  • Laying and maintenance of sewer lines, manholes, and pumping stations
  • House sewer connections and regulation of illegal connections
  • Integration with city sanitation and drainage plans

 

  1. Wastewater Treatment & Disposal
  • Operation and maintenance of Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs)
  • Treatment of wastewater as per environmental norms
  • Safe disposal or reuse of treated wastewater (irrigation, industry)
  • Prevention of sewage discharge into water bodies
  1. Operation & Maintenance (O&M)
  • Regular inspection, preventive maintenance, and emergency repairs
  • Management of breakdowns, water supply interruptions, and overflows
  • Energy management for pumping and treatment operations
  • Asset management of pipelines, pumps, and treatment facilities
  1. Public Health & Environmental Protection
  • Support to health department in preventing waterborne diseases
  • Monitoring sewer overflows and sanitation-related health risks
  • Protection of water sources from pollution
  • Compliance with pollution control and environmental regulations
  1. Revenue, Billing & Consumer Services
  • Issuance of water and sewerage connections
  • Meter reading, billing, and revenue collection
  • Handling consumer complaints related to water supply and sewerage
  • Disconnection and enforcement for unauthorized usage
  1. Project Management & Monitoring
  • Implementation of water and sewerage projects under:
    • Central/State schemes
    • Urban development programs
  • Monitoring project progress, quality, and timelines
  • Preparation of DPRs, tenders, and technical reports
  1. Emergency & Disaster Management
  • Ensuring uninterrupted water supply during emergencies
  • Response to pipeline bursts, contamination incidents, floods, and droughts
  • Coordination with disaster management and district administration
