Health Role and Responsibilities

The Health Department is responsible for public health, sanitation, disease prevention, and environmental health management to ensure a clean, healthy, and safe urban environment.

  1. Public Health & Disease Control
  • Prevention and control of communicable and non-communicable diseases
  • Surveillance, monitoring, and reporting of disease outbreaks
  • Implementation of national and state health programs
  • Coordination with District Health Department and medical authorities
  1. Sanitation & Cleanliness
  • Supervision of city sanitation and cleanliness operations
  • Monitoring of solid waste handling from public health perspective
  • Ensuring hygienic conditions in public places and markets
  • Prevention of open defecation and insanitary practices
  1. Vector Control & Epidemic Prevention
  • Control of mosquitoes, flies, rodents, and other disease vectors
  • Anti-larval, fogging, and spraying operations
  • Seasonal preparedness for malaria, dengue, chikungunya, etc.
  • Emergency response during epidemics and health emergencies
  1. Food Safety & Adulteration Control
  • Inspection of food establishments, hotels, and eateries
  • Sampling and testing of food items
  • Action against food adulteration and unhygienic practices
  • Coordination with Food Safety authorities
  1. Public Health Inspections
  • Health inspections of:
    • Markets
    • Slaughterhouses
    • Dairies
    • Public toilets
  • Issuance of health-related licenses and certificates
  • Enforcement of public health laws and bye-laws
  1. Biomedical & Special Waste Management
  • Monitoring biomedical waste management in healthcare facilities
  • Ensuring safe disposal of animal carcasses and dead animals
  • Supervision of hazardous and special waste from public health angle
  1. Maternal, Child & Community Health Support
  • Support to immunization and maternal–child health programs
  • Public awareness of hygiene, nutrition, and sanitation
  • Health education campaigns and community outreach
  1. Health Infrastructure & Staff Management
  • Management of municipal dispensaries and health centers
  • Deployment and supervision of health staff and sanitation workers
  • Capacity building and training of health personnel
  1. Emergency & Disaster Health Response
  • Public health response during disasters and emergencies
  • Ensuring sanitation, drinking water safety, and disease prevention
  • Coordination with disaster management and relief agencies
  1. Monitoring, Reporting & Legal Functions
