Electrical Role and Responsibilities

The Electrical Department is responsible for planning, installation, operation, and maintenance of municipal electrical infrastructure to ensure safe, reliable, energy-efficient, and uninterrupted electrical services for public amenities.

  1. Street Lighting Management
  • Planning, installation, and maintenance of street lights
  • Ensuring adequate illumination on roads, streets, parks, and public spaces
  • Replacement of defective lamps, fittings, and poles
  • Monitoring functioning of LED and smart lighting systems
  1. Operation & Maintenance of Electrical Systems
  • Maintenance of electrical installations in:
    • Municipal buildings
    • Offices
    • Hospitals and schools
    • Community halls and public toilets
  • Preventive and breakdown maintenance of electrical equipment
  • Ensuring electrical safety and compliance with standards
  1. Power Supply Coordination
  • Coordination with State Electricity Distribution Companies
  • Management of electricity connections and load requirements
  • Resolution of power supply issues related to municipal installations
  • Energy bill monitoring and consumption control
  1. Energy Efficiency & Conservation
  • Implementation of energy-efficient technologies (LED, solar lighting)
  • Reduction of energy consumption and operational costs
  • Adoption of renewable energy solutions in municipal assets
  • Monitoring energy audits and conservation measures
  1. Installation & Upgradation Works
  • Installation of new electrical systems and lighting infrastructure
  • Upgradation of outdated wiring, panels, and equipment
  • Electrification of new municipal assets and public areas
  • Support for urban development and smart city projects
  1. Electrical Safety & Compliance
  • Ensuring compliance with electrical safety rules and regulations
  • Periodic inspection and testing of electrical installations
  • Earthing, lightning protection, and safety audits
  • Prevention of electrical accidents and hazards
  1. Tendering & Contract Supervision
  • Preparation of estimates, BOQs, and technical specifications
  • Supervision of electrical contractors and vendors
  • Quality control and certification of electrical works
  • Verification and processing of contractor bills
  1. Emergency & Disaster Response
  • Restoration of electrical services during:
    • Storms
    • Floods
    • Accidents
  • Support to disaster management and emergency response teams
  • Ensuring lighting at relief camps and emergency locations
  1. Inter-Departmental Coordination
  • Coordination with:
    • Civil Department (poles, trenches, buildings)
    • Traffic & Police Departments (road safety)
    • Fire Department (electrical fire safety)
  • Integrated planning and execution of works
  1. Record Keeping & Reporting
  • Maintenance of records of electrical assets and installations
  • Monitoring maintenance schedules and fault reports
  • Preparation of reports on energy usage, costs, and performance
