Horticulture Role and Responsibilities

The Horticulture Department is responsible for planning, development, maintenance, and conservation of green spaces in the city to enhance urban environment, public health, aesthetics, and ecological balance.

  1. Development & Maintenance of Green Spaces
  • Development and upkeep of parks, gardens, and green belts
  • Maintenance of traffic islands, road medians, and roundabouts
  • Landscaping of public spaces, government buildings, and institutions
  • Regular pruning, watering, and lawn management
  1. Tree Plantation & Urban Forestry
  • Planning and execution of tree plantation programs
  • Selection of suitable native and climate-resilient species
  • Avenue plantation along roads and public areas
  • Survival monitoring and replacement of failed plantations
  1. Tree Protection & Regulation
  • Implementation of tree protection rules and policies
  • Granting permission for tree cutting, pruning, or transplantation
  • Monitoring illegal tree felling and taking enforcement action
  • Maintaining tree census and plantation records
  1. Environmental Protection & Climate Action
  • Enhancing urban green cover to reduce heat-island effect
  • Promoting biodiversity and ecological balance
  • Supporting air quality improvement and noise reduction
  • Coordination with environmental and climate-related initiatives
  1. Nursery Development & Plant Supply
  • Establishment and maintenance of municipal nurseries
  • Production and supply of saplings, plants, and ornamental species
  • Supporting plantation drives, public programs, and city beautification
  • Distribution of plants to citizens and institutions
  1. Beautification & City Aesthetics
  • Seasonal flower displays and decorative landscaping
  • Beautification of heritage sites, public squares, and entry points
  • Support for city events, festivals, and national functions
  • Enhancing visual appeal of urban spaces
  1. Public Participation & Awareness
  • Encouraging citizen participation in plantation and park adoption
  • Conducting awareness programs on tree conservation and greenery
  • Coordination with RWAs, NGOs, schools, and community groups
  • Promoting “green city” initiatives
  1. Maintenance of Playgrounds & Open Spaces
  • Maintenance of playgrounds, open grounds, and recreational areas
  • Ensuring safety, cleanliness, and usability of green spaces
  • Coordination with sports and education departments when required
  1. Inter-Departmental Coordination
  • Coordination with:
    • Engineering Department (roads & drainage)
    • Town Planning Department (land use & open spaces)
    • Health & Sanitation Department
  • Integration of green planning in urban development projects
  1. Disaster Management & Special Functions
  • Removal of fallen or dangerous trees during storms and disasters
  • Emergency pruning to ensure public safety
  • Support during floods, cyclones, and other natural events
